Dessert Table
You may have read some of my articles about meal time being a time for family.  In our family we believe this and there is no time better to gather around a table than holiday time.

Food warms the heart and the tastes of old favorites spark memories of days gone by.  Remember the time ...

In our house food is one of the central elements of the holidays.  I am a baker and enjoy nothing more than baking goodies for family and friends.  Well, maybe holiday decorating, but cooking and baking is at the top of my list.

Cakes, cookies and pies, rest on their own table while turkey, ham, and all the side dishes require places of their own.

Cookies by the sacks ful

When my children were small and finances were tight there was little cash leftover for gifts to family members.  It was then that I first began to bake cookies and give each family a 'goodie basket' as a gift of love.  We all agreed that the little money we had to spend on gifts should be focused on our children.  I have 4 sisters so you can imagine how quickly a list can grow.

We all decided to find something we could 'make' and for me this meant cookies.  I would gather the kids, and maybe a sister or two, and spend a few days baking.

Now my children are grown with children of their own and many of my 'goodie baskets' have evolved into something more than just homemade goodies.  But at the heart of each one is an assortment of favorite cookies, candies, and breads.

Goodie Baskets

Here is one of my recent goodie baskets.  I do not use filler material so the entire basket is absolutely full of treats and small gifts for each family, or is some cases individuals.

You can purchase rolls of shrink wrap now at most craft or big box stores and make your own baskets for a fraction of the cost of a store bought version.  One of the wonderful things is that these gift baskets can be customized for each recipient.  And it doesn't even have to be a basket.  As a teacher I usually give small gifts to other teachers and to my students.  I search the dollar stores for small containers I can use for individual gifts then fill them with cookies or homemade candies.  Insert a recipe card if you like and you will be the talk of your neighborhood.  Our mail carrier loves a mug filled with cookies and hot chocolate mix.  Use your imagination and surprise someone with a gift that truly comes from the heart.
